Birth - Radio Documentary

BIRTH is a one-hour public radio and audio documentary about the practices and perceptions of birth in America. BIRTH is set to air on Public Radio International during Women's History Month in March 2007. Click here for a demo of what this show is going to sound like. I'm highly anticipating this show based on the excerpt.

It sounded like that was Debra Pascali-Bonaro talking in the clip about a mother she attended as a doula progressing from only 3 centimeters dilated to a one-handed catch by the doctor in an extremely short time, after being able to express her emotions about the labor. There were also sound bites from mothers and other birth professionals about hopes, fear, culture, and the rite of passage of birth.

What a joy to wake up this morning and listen to a clip from the Birth Tour. I took the opportunity to go and sit with a group of woman and participate on the Birth Tour in July of this year. It was fun as well as eyeopening. I was able to see and hear the some of the many different ways that women think and feel about Birth in our American culture. Time and time again I try to sit back and listen and understand why people feel the way that they do about birth, to help me understand my role. The Birth-Radio Documentary is going to give many more people the opportunity to experience and understand the many faces of birth in the US. Hopefully it will open the eyes of our culture enough to know that taking the time to research your options is one of the most important pieces of pregnancy, labor and birth.
I would like to commend Ahri and Tania for their vision. It is so important that the people in our culture stand up for what they believe.
Thank you and many blessings to those that are able.

My husband and I attended The Birth Tour's final stop in Berkeley last night. It was awesome and so inspiring to be in a room filled with people who want to look at and talk about childbirth realistically and positively. As one participant noted, the energy was palpable.
I'm realizing that there are many like me and my husband- people who are moving toward dedicating their lives to creating community around birth- I can't wait to see how it all unfolds!
